The allegations centre on the Association of Community Organisations for Reform Now (Acorn), a group that boasts 400,000 members and has led a national voter registration drive in poor communities using some 13,000 canvassers to sign up 1.3 million new voters. Senator Obama helped Acorn and other groups register voters in 1992 when he was the director of Project Vote and last year hailed it for being smack dab in the middle of increasing voter participation. Acorn has endorsed Mr Obama in the presidential election. But in recent weeks, officials in at least 15 states have raised concerns about Acorns work. In Florida it was reported that Mickey Mouse had tried to register to vote through Acorn while in Ohio — another swing state — a teenager registered 73 times when offered cash and cigarettes by an Acorn canvasser. In a fund-raising email to supporters, Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska, Senator McCains vice-presidential running mate, said: The Left-wing activist group, Acorn, is now under investigation for voter registration fraud in a number of battleground states... We cant allow Leftist groups like Acorn to steal this election. A fund-raising email from The McCain Legal Team said: We need your help to ensure a fair and honest election. Already we have seen nationwide voter registration fraud by Acorn — a group closely linked to Barack Obama. John Danforth, a former senator and key McCain ally, gave warning of a potential nightmare that could be even worse than 2000, when disputes centred on hanging chads in Florida delayed the election result for 36 days. Senator Obama has a special responsibility to rein in Acorn and we call upon him to do that, he said, but stopped short of accusing the Obama campaign of any involvement in voter fraud. The Obama campaign said that attempts to connect him with Acorn and voter fraud were shameful, transparently cynical and ludicrous.

He served as general counsel for ACORN in Illinois, channeled millions to the organization from the Chicago Annenberg Challenge with Bill Ayers (whose funds he distributed), and has lately spent $800,000 of his campaign money to subsidize the groups activities.
