Henryk Wars/ Tekst Andrzej Włast)Tango z rewii "1000 pięknych dziewcząt" (1000 Beautiful Girls), Syrena Electro 1929------------------------------NOTE: Henryk WARS (né Warszawski) (b. in Warsaw, 1902 d. in LA, California, 1977) composed music for 50 films in the interwar period in Poland, and another 60, after WWII, in USA. He also compsed dozens of hit songs for the revue-theatres and films: „Miłość ci wszystko wybaczy" (Love Will Forgive You Everything) sung by Hanka Ordonówna , „Umówiłem się z nią na dziewiątą" (I Hale A Date With Her At Nine) and „Sex Appeal" sung by Eugeniusz Bodo, „Ach, jak przyjemnie (Ah, How Lovely!) and „Już nie zapomnisz mnie" (Now, You Will Remember Me) sung by Aleksander Żabczyński. In 1925 he completed studies of composition and conducting at Warsaw Conservatory. Two years later he composed „New York Times, sung in the theatre „Karuzela" (Merry-Go-Round) by Tadeusz Olsza („I do nothing all day but reading New York Times") and recorded by Henryk Gold's Orchestra for „Syrena Rekord". The song never became a hit, though, and Wars had to wait a little longer for the fame - which came with the hit „Zatańczmy tango" (Let's Dance a Tango) he composed in 1928 for the duett Stanisława Nowicka and Eugeniusz Bodo. He was employed then in the theatre „Perskie Oko" as a pianist, he also joined Henryk Golds band. In the same year he was offered a lucrative job as artistic director of „Syrena-Electro" record company and he kept it until 1935, when he was displaced by Iwo Wesby. In 1929 he organised a revellers band Chór Warsa, recording exclusively for Syrena Elektro and a year later, another one „Weseli Chłopcy z Columbii" (Happy Columbia Lads), who recorded for Columbia. In 1930 he composed music for the hit movie „Na Sybir" (To Syberia), with a beautiful evergreen English waltz „Płomienne serca" (The Flaming Hearts, see: http://pl.youtube.com/watch?v=i0n-o2GSToY). The premiere of that one-of-first Polish talkies took place at the Castle of Warsaw, in the presence of the President of Poland, Ignacy Mościcki. In later years Wars recorded dozens of tangos, foxtrotts for the theatres „Morskie Oko „Hollywood , „Wielka Rewia, he wrote music for most popular films: „Paweł i Gaweł", "Szpieg w masce" (A Masked Spy), „Piętro wyżej" (Upstairs), „Zapomniana melodia" (A Forgotten Tune) and he was a pioneer of the swing music in Poland. He had a huge apartament in Aleje Jerozolimskie with famous two pianos in his studio: one black, and one white, where he used to arrange rehearsals with artists, he wrote his music for. His orchestra recordings for „Syrena" show us his unusual class and size of his talent; in the conoisseurs' opinion, many of Henryk Wars Orchestra's renditions of international dance hits („Let Yourself Go", „Lets Face The Music And Dance") are better than originals. In August 1939 he was mobilised and he fought the German invaders in the September Campaign, until the capitulation. Captured by the Wehrmacht, he managed to flee from the transport and he got to the Soviet occupation zone. In 1940 Lwow he arranged the huge (61 persons!) Polish artistic band, with such famous pre-war stars like Eugeniusz Bodo, Adam Aston or Albert Harris. They gave hundreds of concerts throughout the USSR, until June 1941 when the Soviet-German war broke out. Wars immediately gave up his artistical tournee and managed to join Polish emigree army, formed by General Anders first in Kazachstan and later after the international scandal caused by uncovering of the mass graves of the Polish officers murdered by Soviets in Katyn the Army was lead out by Anders from the "Soviet paradise" to Persia. With the Polish Army in the West, Henryk Wars marched via Palestine, North Africa to Italy) directing the artistic group „Czołówka (The Forefont. In 1944, for his activity and devotion, he was decorated with the Silver Cross of Virtue. After the war he emigrated to USA where, after many years of anonimity, in 1954 he finally managed to bind his fate with the Hollywood film producers. He wrote music for Universal Pictures, Warner Bros and 20th Century Fox: „The Big Heat with Glenn Ford, „China Doll, „The Phoenix City Story or „Flipper (followed by the TV series „Flippers New Adventures) and some of his songs became international hits (e.g. „Sleep, My Child and „Oper And Oper sung by Margaret Witting). He also wrote symphonic music and his jazz-suite „Manhattan Impression was preesented in the Warsaw Symphony Hall, under Wars personal direction.
