Most importantly, while it might be nice if we happened to get it right & end up with a benevolent organization like the StarTrek federation, what happens if we mess up & get stuck with a StarWars style empire? Some people are simply unable to help themselves in the way that many economists hope for in an ideal world. If society is not held together through interdependance, then youll find many falling through the cracks.You only need to look at the state of the health care system to see the risks.
