Nov 19, 2008 - That was great fun! Much better than a later Phil Silvers appearance that was posted recently at YouTube. It's also sad in a way that they talk about him making a breakthrough on TV, given that after Bilko, Silvers would never recapture that moment of fame he enjoyed between 1955 and 1959. Nevertheless, it's still an excellent show - one of the best - and like many other people I get much pleasure out of watching it.

Nov 19, 2008 - Thanx for posting this funny classic. Fred Allen and Phil Silvers on one stage! They make my head spin they are both so funny. I am glad that WML fans have posted two clips of Phil Silvers, so the next generation can see his wit, charm, and comedy talent. His Sgt Bilko / You'll Never Get Rich / Phil Silvers Show sitcom was, with I Love Lucy, The Honeymooners, and Leave it to Beaver, one of the gold standards of writing. His story about the girl from Reno typifies his crisp comic timing.

Nov 19, 2008 - Great moments when we get to see 1 those designer original masks (yeesh -- DK wore hers like a hat in the goodnight sequence), 2 live TV director jargon in action, 3 the ONLY time I can remember of a candid shot of the Sunday night audience, and 4 Silvers, hat in hand, greeting the panel. He thought he was being a wiseguy when he kissed FA: he will die in less than four?? months, so Silvers probably was glad he took the opportunity when he had the opportunity. Lesson there for us.

Nov 19, 2008 - I agree with you that I like this Phil Silvers WML clip I like better than the other Silvers WML clip currently available. Silver did a mystery guest appearance in, if memory serves, 1959 to plug the last time change for The Phil Silvers Show: everyone is hysterical in that one. It features a short shot of the WML stage manager in action. I am grateful for any Phil Silvers clips that show up on YouTube, but that 1959 appearance would be a doozy to post.

Nov 19, 2008 - When my exhubby was showing me old family photo albums, I saw some pictures that made me go "wow"...they were of Phil Silvers and his family...his wife was related to my ex's family...so he was a cousin by marriage. I thought that was so cool because I have always been a Bilko fan! Thanks for the great upload...your fantastic!

Nov 19, 2008 - Like Bilko, Silvers was a compulsive gambler. It led to the breakup of his marriage.
