This handy instructional video will show you how to hook up an Atari 2600 to a modern VCR. We show what wires to use with the Atari 2600. We show how to hookup an Atari 2600 and 7800 to a tv or television with modern video inputs like component, s-video and composite (you'll use composite) and or RF Coax. We show what Radio Shack equipment to buy to make it work. Classic Game Room loves Atari and all of the great video games that are available from the 1970's to the 1980's. These old school classics should be kept alive and playing for future generations. Dec 4, 2008 - I got one of the wood grain Atari 2600 today at a garage sale for $4 with like 20 games. Did I do good?
yellowdart137 Says:
Dec 4, 2008 - yea i would say you did good. even if it doesn't work you got 20 games and possibly a controller and such.

Dec 4, 2008 - oh yeah thanks nintendo,we just fucked up with the rf output from the nes2 toploader.so we,re forced to hoggle a big ntsc vrc/dvd recorder to hookup the nes2 to a modern tv setthat way trough a/v jacks. and still experience those ugly straps onscreen.
yellowdart137 Says:
Dec 4, 2008 - the RF jack is indeed at radio shack. i bought one today and there is no shortage. also the powersupply can be purchased there too. the part is a RCA to F adapter. its $3.49, video/sound output is about the same as the original adapter.
Ryoga2K Says:
Dec 4, 2008 - The little plug is much better than the Videogame/Antenna Switch which will only add noise to the signal and won't be of any use pretty soon when the channels go digital anyway, yes you can hook up those switches one after another so you can have a multiswitch that connects one console to another and then to another and so on but the quality will suck, its always better to get the shortest path for your signal.
Ryoga2K Says:
Dec 4, 2008 - The B&W/Color switch will work exactly the same way it works if you connect the system directly to the TV, altough if your TV still has an analog tuner I recommend connecting it directly than trough a VCR because you will be adding more noise to the signal when running it trough all the components of the VCR.
Ryoga2K Says:
Dec 4, 2008 - Here in america its the same thing but many modern tvs don't have an analog tuner no more, so the input won't be demodulated, that same thing happens with European TVs that only have a DVB tuner, so in this case he is using the internal analog tuner from the vcr to convert the signal to composite (would be the same thing as if you use a VCR in europe to convert the input to SCART) which the modern tvs still use without problem.

Dec 4, 2008 - I have a question guys, Does the smaller version of the Atari 2600 share the same TV cables and power adapter as the woody and Vader versions?
TheSleekGamer Says:
Dec 4, 2008 - I mean the "2600 Jr"

Dec 4, 2008 - Wow man, thanks so much!I have an Atari 7800 and a Magnavox Odyssey 2 just lying around because I can't plug them into my television. but now I know what to do!
sygo7g Says:
Dec 4, 2008 - That was due to where you live, depending on whether or not channel 3 or 4 was used to broadcast a VHF station in the vincinity. I never had that sort of problem where I live, though if I had lived up in Detroit, I would've had it set on ch3 as 4 is an NBC station up there. It has been this way for the past 60-70 years.

Dec 4, 2008 - does anyone know which video cables a European Mega Drive has?? (my tv only has AV plug and composite) i wanted to get one but if it wont work then its no goodthanks
Vejo3 Says:
Dec 4, 2008 - Coaxial innit? The same as what would be used as an antenna cable. I think you can buy crossovers from Coax to A/V cables.

Dec 4, 2008 - Just bought a Woody on Graigs for $50 and 60 games. I used furniture polish and it looks new. Plugged it in and it plays like new. My PS2 burned out in a year. This 2600 I bought sat in this ladies basement for 20 years. She had no idea they were collectable. This was the best fifty I ever spent. I'm on my tenth hour straight playing Bezerk. Everyone should own a woodgrain2600 for a second time before they die. It's the gen Xers version of the Mustang.

Dec 4, 2008 - I'm 13 and I think the old games are WAY better than the new ones...The Atari was great, but the NES was much better. =)
