23 trade unions in the educational sector have emphasised that the proposed strike on Thursday will hinder development, peace and future national aims. They said striking in the present context will not be beneficial to the country.Secretary of the Independent Lanka Pioneer Graduate Teachers' Union Nalin Perera said the teachers are not supporting the strike. There is a political agenda behind it. The JVP is demanding a postponement of the polls and not a salary increase. He said the election is not a concern of the public servants. Secretary of the Sri Lanka Students Housing Authority Service Union Sagara Wijeratne asserted that their union totally rejects the strike action. The Executive Committee met on the 05th of this month and decided not to join the strike as it is a politically motivated action. He said there is an ongoing war and making a 5000 rupee salary hike amounts to ending the war. It means that the country will be handed over to Prabakaran. Secretary of the all Ceylon English Teacher's Union Ramani Jayaweera said as women they oppose the strike on behalf of the entire generation of children. She requested them to take positive action on behalf of the children.
