We are helping Uganda this year.September 30th, 2008 Peace & Conflict Update #36: 8 Million DisplacedDisplacement Crisis in the RegionThe Democratic Republic of the Congo's (DRC) already complex and monumental displacement crisis has been compounded in the recent weeks since the LRA's attacks on northeastern DRC villages. 17,000 Congolese have fled the fighting and are now displaced near UN and Congolese Army posts, some even spilling into neighboring Sudan. The region is now scrambling to solve the complex displacement issue and to address the growing humanitarian crisis caused by increased LRA activity. This region already faces one the most complex internal displacement catastrophes in history: more than 8 million people are displaced in Uganda, eastern DRC and south Sudan because of the instability within each country. LRA activity in this region is only adding to these numbers and complicating the situation.Starve the LRAUganda's government is urging aid organizations to cease food aid to the LRA and starve them out their camps in north-eastern DRC where they may be forced to sign the Final Peace Agreement or face armed conflict. Military pressure is mounting in the region as the governments of south Sudan, DRC and Uganda are all cooperating and coordinating militarily to reach an end to Joseph Kony's regional terror.The Acholi Can Do ItAcholi leaders are still struggling to convince the international community that justice can be implemented by the Ugandan government and through tribal rituals.
